Roadrunner SMB is a privately held company built around a single problem: making Amazon EFS work natively for Windows users and applications. Not as one feature in a broad product line — as the entire focus of the company.
That focus is the point. AWS offers FSx for Windows as a general-purpose managed file service. The open-source world offers Samba and CTDB as building blocks. Between them sits a gap: teams who want EFS economics and elasticity and native Windows SMB, Active Directory, and ACL behavior — delivered as a supported product, not a DIY project. Closing that gap is all we do.
Deep expertise in a narrow domain
Native SMB on EFS sits at the intersection of several hard specialties: NAS and file-storage architecture, AWS infrastructure, Samba and CTDB clustering, Active Directory integration, and the performance engineering that VDI login storms demand. Most teams encounter these areas occasionally. We work in them every day — it's the only thing we work on.

Where this comes from
I've spent my career at the file layer. As CTO at Citrix®, I helped bring the first VDI products to market. As founder and CEO of SoftNAS®, I built one of the most widely deployed file-storage products on AWS — which means I've spent years learning what makes cloud file storage genuinely work at scale.
That experience led me to a clear conviction: Amazon EFS® is what a cloud filesystem should be — elastic, durable, multi-AZ by design, and priced for actual consumption. It's the foundation I'd choose for any file workload on AWS today.
EFS is built around NFS — the right protocol for Linux and modern cloud-native workloads.
